Habitat: Thrives in full sun to light shade and dry to medium, well-drained soils. Does well in rocky, sandy, or gravelly sites. Common in the Virginia mountains; rare in the piedmont.
Wildlife value: In June to Aug. the nodding clusters of pink flowers appear and are attractive to pollinators.
