Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests and woodlands, high-elevation forests, balds, seepage swamps, and bogs; most frequent and numerous at middle to high elevations; primarily but not exclusively in moderately to extremely acidic, nutrient-poor soils. Frequent to common in the Virginia mountains; infrequent in the Piedmont (mostly in the inner and northern parts); rare in the Coastal Plain.
