Habitat: Adaptable shrub is found naturally on the banks of streams and ponds, along the edges of marshes, in alluvial shrub thickets, and along the sedimentary cliffs of our Coastal Plain rivers. Infrequent and scattered in the Virginia Coastal Plain and Piedmont; rare in the mountains.

Wildlife Value: Flowers attract butterflies, nectar-bees, and other pollinator insects. It is a larval host for the California & southern dogfaces, Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus), Gray hairstreak, Hoary edge skipper. Foliage browsed by small mammals.
