Habitat: Salt scrub, tidal oligohaline to mesohaline marshes, tidal swamps, interdune swales dune grasslands and scrub; also colonizing moist, abused land, roadsides, ditches, old fields, and a variety of other disturbed areas, coastal and inland. Common in the Virginia Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont.

Wildlife Value: Nectar attracts pollinators and insects, provides cover, and seeds are enjoyed by birds.
