
Habitat: In diverse wetland habitats, including floodplain forests, alluvial and tidal swamps, seeps and seepage swamps, marshes, bogs, flood-scoured streamsides, and various disturbed habitats; occasionally in low, mesic forests and old fields. Common throughout Virginia
Wildlife Value: This is a larval host plant that supports Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma), Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta), and Question Mark Butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis) larvae. Mammals browse the foliage of this plant.
