Habitat

Mesic to rather dry upland forests and woodlands, well-drained floodplain forests, and high-elevation deciduous forests; most characteristic of moderately to strongly base-rich soils, at least at lower elevations and on drier sites; ascends to at least to 1400 m (4600 ft) elevation in the mountains. Frequent throughout Virginia

Wildlife value

Several species of moth are attracted to the foliage. Larval host for butterflies and Luna moths. This plant supports Hickory Horndevil (Citheronia regalis) larvae
