Habitat: Cove forests, various mesic to dry-mesic upland forests, well-drained floodplain forests, and seepage swamp hummocks; less characteristically in northern hardwood forests and dry, calcareous woodlands; generally in moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the Virginia mountains and Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Attracts birds, moths, and bumblebees. Seeds eaten by quail

Note: Flowers have a lemony or citronella fragrance. Weedy
