Habitat: Northern hardwood forests, cove forests, and other mesic slope forests; at lower elevations it is generally restricted to cool, sheltered habitats. Common in the Virginia mountains, especially at higher elevations; infrequent in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain north of the James River, and rare south of the James River in these provinces
