Habitat

Mesic to dry forests, old fields, and rocky woodlands. Common in the Virginia Piedmont; frequent in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the mountain

Wildlife value

Provides winter cover. Supports Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) and Eastern Pine Elfin (Callophrys niphon) larvae. Squirrels, other small mammals, and birds eat the seeds
