Habitat

Mesic to dry, often rocky forests and woodlands, shaded outcrops, seeps, and Coastal Plain shell-marl ravines; most abundant on, but not restricted to, calcareous substrates. Common in the Virginia mountains; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain

Wildlife value

Provides early-season pollen for native bees and flies, serving as an important resource when few other woodland flowers are in bloom. While wind-pollinated to some extent, its flowers also attract small pollinators seeking early nectar and shelter. The plant’s foliage supports a variety of small insects, which in turn provide food for early-emerging birds
