Habitat: Well-drained floodplain forests, stream banks, mesic to occasionally dry upland forests. Frequent to common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; less frequent and restricted to lower elevations in the mountains.
Wildlife Value: Supports specialized bee: Andrena (Derandrena) uvulariae.
Edibility: Young shoots are said to have a flavor reminiscent of asparagus. Tea made from the roots has been used to treat diarrhea and other ailments
