Habitat

Dry-mesic to dry (rarely mesic) upland forests, woodlands, and clearings; only occasionally in alluvial habitats. Frequent in the Virginia Piedmont and mountains (rare in southwestern Virginia); infrequent in the Coastal Plain.

Wildlife value

Pollinated by insects. Attracts butterfly, bees, birds, and hummingbirds. Dead stems are used by stem-nesting bees
